Cannons Creek Independent High School performed ‘Save Hamlet!’ as its annual dramatic performance on 22 and 23 May 2025. The 22-strong cast performed Mark Harvey Levine‘s play – a comedic take on Shakespeare’s classic tragedy “Hamlet”. In this version, many of the traditionally male characters are actually women in disguise. These quick-thinking female characters realize there is likely to be a grim ending and decide to intervene to prevent the widespread death and destruction. The play showcases female empowerment and replaces weapons with comedic alternatives (like pool noodles). Famous lines from Shakespeare’s original are incorporated but with a twist, allowing for a lighter, more witty approach to the well-known story. The play was directed by Head of Drama, Ms Judith Herbig.
“I’m very excited you’ll be doing this production! This will be the first non-US production of ‘Save Hamlet’. I’m very curious to hear how it all goes! I just wanted to wish you and the cast a hearty “Break a leg” for ‘Save Hamlet’, which I believe will be performed today and Friday. Thank you for choosing my work!” said Mark Harvey Levine (the playwright) in an email to Ms Herbig.
“What a fun and highly entertaining show! The actors were brilliant, the costumes clever and beautiful, and the plot is just too funny! A big well done to Ms Herbig and everyone involved.” – Mrs Jeannette Clarke, parent.
