Foundation Phase highlights its Digital Literacy programme

Digital Literacy and Coding and Robotics create such a great platform for pupils to express their creativity, exercise their problem-solving skills, collaborate, and learn more about the world, all through the use of technology. The focus this year was to try and integrate what was happening in the Computer Lab, with what the students were learning about in their PBL and IBL lessons.

Grade 1 – They worked a lot on direction and basic instructions through the use of our BeeBots. We also integrated our robotics with the topics they were learning about in their classes. For example coding their robots to move between images of the national symbols of South Africa or to calculate basic sums. They also learned how to use Google Slides, build 3D virtual structures in Block Builder, Sequence code in Rodocodo, collected data using code compiling, brought their artwork to life with Quiver AR and practised their typing skills.

Grade 2 – Built and coded their own Cubroid cars, learned how to use conditional statements and loops to code Scottie Go, designed and coded their own presentation of the water cycle on Scratch JR. Their highlight was designing their own 3D alien on TInkerCAD and then being able to print it using our 3D printer.

Grade 3 – Started off Term 3 learning about Circuits and coding their own circuit simulation on Scratch. They also revised online safety and had the privilege of creating their own Gmail passwords, which most were able to remember without assistance. They were introduced to Google Sheets and learnt how to style their sheets and input data. They fine-tuned their Canva skills by creating interactive and animated videos and used code blocks to build and animate their own virtual quiz worlds in Cospaces. Near the end of the year they learned how to create Stopmotion animations and edit them using iMovie.
