We are excited to welcome new staff to our Cannons team for 2024 – we hope they enjoy many happy years with us!
Edgar Nuves – HS Maths & Physical Sciences Teacher
I was born in Vosloorus, Gauteng and attended Boksburg High School. I have two degrees from Stellenbosch University: BSc Chemistry and Polymer Science as well as a PGDip in Music Technology. My third degree is a PGCE from STADIO. This is my fifth year of teaching and I began formal teaching at Stellenbosch University as a lecturer assistant in 2020 for Computer Skills 372. I am the last born and have two siblings.
My goals for this year is to provide an enjoyable and challenging learning environment for Mathematics and Science at Cannons Creek. I am excited to share my passion for Mathematics and Science and to help students overcome their Mathematics anxiety.
One of my goals for the year is to study for an Honours degree in Inclusive Education (part-time). I hope to obtain my PhD in a number of years and become Dr Nuves.
At Cannons Creek I am not only excited to work with students to achieve excellent results and have a world class education, but I cannot wait to make an impact on the sport and cultural curricula. I see myself joining the Music or STEAM team, but I am going to be flexible to join sport or another cultural activity.
What I enjoy about teaching is imparting knowledge and values to students and watching them grow holistically.
Claire Arton-Powell – PS Pupil Counsellor
I am a skilled mediator, conciliator, and intermediary who holds a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Social Work. I am passionate about helping individuals who have suffered from childhood neglect and trauma. My expertise lies in working with Primary Schools in the Western Cape, to address and prevent the long-term effects of childhood trauma.
I have seen how childhood neglect and abuse can have a negative impact on a person’s relationships and decision-making abilities. This is why I am on a mission to tackle these issues in Primary Schools where early interventions can help mitigate the damaging effects of childhood trauma.
As a family and divorce mediation specialist, I understand the emotional toll that these situations can take on children. I work closely with families to help them reach fair and individualized divorce agreements, including comprehensive parenting plans that prioritise the well-being of the children involved.
Anneline Luke – PS Secretary & PA to the Principal
I was born and raised in Fish Hoek. I have been working in schools since 2014 and love what I do. Prior to working in the Education sector, I worked in Hospitality for 20 years, both locally and abroad. I am a wife and mom, with my son in Grade 2 this year. My daughter is currently studying Hospitality. My goal for this year is to live life to its fullest, spending as much time as possible with family and exploring South Africa. I love working with children and try to be the best that I can be in my role.
Martin Levitt – IT Integrator
Originally from Port Elizabeth, then schooled in Johannesburg, I ended up in Cape Town where I found my passion was all things “Technology” and eventually married my beautiful wife. I live to discover new tools and trends, immersing myself in them, and then showing others the magic. There is no greater feeling than sharing my passion with others, in the hopes of making their work easier and putting a smile on their face. I spent the last 12 years working in IT in Education and the last four years as the IT Operations Manager for an Independent School. I look forward to the STEAM journey.
Mike Ford – Grade 5 Teacher
I have been privileged to spend the majority of my adult life helping, watching and teaching children so that they can grow and develop both academically and emotionally and fulfil their potential. It was never in doubt that when I retired from principalship I would return to the classroom to continue doing what I have always been passionate about.
The opportunity to teach at Cannons Creek is exactly the kind of opportunity that I was hoping for and I feel blessed to have been given the chance to contribute to the fine education that the school is so well known for. Although I have been principal of four schools in my career, one of which was a High School, it is no secret that my real focus has always been on the intermediate phase and teaching Mathematics to Grade 5s is something that I look forward to with excitement.
Children learn best when they feel secure and happy. I have always strived to make the places that I have worked in to be places where children feel safe and I hope that my classroom, at Cannons Creek, will be just that.
Bronwyn Harvey – Head of Arts & Culture
I hail from Cape Town, but moved around quite a bit, starting my teaching career in 2002 at Kingswood College in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape, before returning to the Western Cape in 2015. I am committed to excellence in the Arts and believe in the holistic value of an arts education for every child. I have a background in music, specifically singing, theatre, and all things performance-related, and while teaching in those disciplines is at my core, I still enjoy performing given the chance, most recently at the Masque in Muizenberg in “The Murder of the Murder” of Roger Ackroyd. My vision for the Arts and Culture at Cannons Creek is for every child to find their joy through and in the Arts, and to leave the world a little better than how I found it.
Matts van den Berg – Sport Co-ordinator
I spent the first half of my childhood in rural Northern Cape (in a very small mining town called Kleinzee) and the latter half in Joburg and finished school in Joburg. I started to study Biokinectics at UP and finished with an Honours degree in Psychology and Psychometrics whilst coaching cricket and hockey for pocket money.
Afterwards I lived in Vienna, Austria for five years, studying and working as a sport mental trainer. I then finished in 2023, having studied to become a certified Jungian Coach (life coach).
Since my student days I have been fascinated with connecting with people of different backgrounds, with an authentic understanding of both individuals and groups. Sport has been a huge driving force behind the passion I have for connecting and relating to others.
I’ve been connected to Cannons through coaching. I’ve coached cricket and hockey in various age groups here for the past five years. My goal for this year is to have a positive and nurturing impact in as many kids’ lives as possible and to be someone they can count on for both sport and life issues.
