Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a drone… well, Cannons Creek pupils flying drones!
The Grade 8s and 9s all had a chance to fly the Tello drones from their Chromebooks for the first time this week. With the unmistakable ‘mosquito’ buzzing sound in the background, many other sounds of laughter, shrieks of delight, and surprise could be heard as the pupils became acquainted with all these little machines can do. Much fun was had while learning – and there is still much more to come!
Drones – learning to fly them and code them – form part of our curated syllabus content for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) in Grades 8 and 9. While drone technology and the use thereof provides exciting and contemporary possibilities to learn some of the hard skills, it also facilitates the acquisition of those 21st-century skills that we want our pupils to have, namely: curiosity, communication, creativity and critical thinking/reasoning, creativity/creative thinking, problem-solving, metacognition, collaboration, communication and global citizenship.
