Cannons pupils attend Branding bootcamp

Red & Yellow School recently ran a Bootcamp, where two of our pupils, Isabella Baker (Grade 11) and Dana Moores (Grade 9) attended. The experience was meant to be a day of Learning, Fun, and Real-World Experience. This year, pupils worked directly with real-life brand, Bootlegger, which allowed them to apply problem-solving skills and strategic thinking to real-world scenarios. This hands-on experience aimed to enhance their learning but also gave them a taste of what it’s like to work in a professional environment.

Feedback from Isabella:

Red & Yellow provided us with breakfast, which was shortly followed by some free coffee from Bootlegger. This was the company that we were going to work with. We then split ourselves into seven groups of roughly eight people per group. The Bootlegger CEO introduced us to the history of the company, and one of his colleagues introduced us to the challenge for the day. As a group, we had to choose two of three challenges: design a TikTok campaign to grow their account, design an icon and create a tag-line for their logo, or create a SWOT analysis of the Bootlegger company. My team (team Mugshot) chose to create the icon and tag-line, as well as the SWOT analysis. We had about six hours to complete this. There were lecturers from Red & Yellow, the two men from Bootlegger, and workers from Publicis Groupe at the event to advise us if we needed it.

Once we completed the challenge, and had presented our work to the judges, we were taken on a short tour of Red & Yellow. Following this, we were seated back down, where we found out that team Mugshot won second place prize! It was a fantastic event and I learnt so much.

Feedback from Dana:

We had to choose two of these three briefs: A TikTok campaign, a SWOT analysis or a logo and slogan. We chose the SWOT analysis and logo and slogan. We ended up splitting the group into people who are interested in design (to do the logo), and people who are interested in business and marketing (to do the SWOT analysis). I was part of the group who did the logo. At first, it was challenging working with a group because I felt strongly about my ideas, but none of them were getting chosen by the rest of the group. From this I learnt about compromise and how even though I like my own ideas, the opinion of the majority is more important. In the end, the logo we went with was a record with a coffee cup on it. This was loosely inspired by my idea of doing a cassette tape as the logo, so I was very grateful that one of my ideas was picked up and expanded on. We ended up placing second out of all the groups that were there.

Red and Yellow is a very interesting and non-conventional school. There are no classrooms, just tables and chairs out in the open that are supposed to represent the different classes. I appreciate them for this learning experience (and also the free food).
