CC Mandela Day (4)

Cannons Creek supports Mandela Day

This year for Mandela Day, Cannons Creek Independent School got involved in a number of community initiatives thereby truly embracing the 2023 Mandela Day theme – “It’s in Your Hands”. In the Primary School, the activities were as follows – the Foundation Phase made sandwiches, which will be donated to Mothers That Care who will distribute accordingly; while the Grade 4s spent some time clearing up the nearby canal area. The Grade 5s met with their penpals from Pinelands Place Care Centre; and the Grade 6s collected pet items and made cards for The BE KIND Foundation (NGO based in Durbanville who care for humans and animals in need). The Primary School Outreach team will also prepare and produce vegetable soup which were distributed amongst the Kalksteenfontein community. The entirety of the High School each made sandwiches from a loaf of bread, where these were donated to those in need. Sincere thanks to the parents for their support of these initiatives, and to Rotary Club of Pinelands for their supplementary donation of bread and jam.

At Cannons Creek, Outreach is an integral part of who the school is, spearheaded by Interact/Outreach societies in each respective school. Pupils are encouraged to involve themselves in one or more of the community service programmes that the school supports; and are taught the importance of sharing, contributing and helping others improve their quality of life. Some of the organisations that the school supports or have supported are New Beginnings, Little Footprints Educare, Salvation Army Manenberg, Sunshine Corner Educare Centre, Edu-tots Educare in Garden Village, SAAGE, The SA Guide Dogs Association, Siyakhula Langa organisation, U-turn, and the Maitland Cottage Children’s Hospital.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived; it is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela
