CC Primary Mandela Day (14)

Cannons Creek Primary celebrates Mandela Day

Cannons Creek Independent School celebrated a belated Mandela Day during the first week of Term 3, owing to Mandela Day falling within the holidays. “

The 67 minutes we spend serving others are a reminder of the 67 years of his life that he fought for justice and tried to make South Africa a better place for all people. We can all make a difference, regardless of our age,” said Mrs Tracy Wahl (Principal). The Cannons pupils engaged in a variety of deeds, showing their involvement and gratitude within the extended community.

  • Grade RR-3 pupils made sandwiches as a way to give back to the community, which were dispersed through the Callas Foundation and Village Tods Educare Centre.
  • The Grade 4s decorated biscuits with icing sugar and jelly tots, which were later delivered to the Village Tods Educare Centre. They then truly embodied their motto, “Caring for our community” by hosting a delightful playdate morning with the children from the Mary Kihn School for the Hearing Impaired. “This special occasion also provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to explore their IBL theme, ‘How do we connect and explore in our amazing world’,” said Mrs Lisa Gopal (Grade 4 Teacher).
  • The Grade 5s wrote special, inspiring messages on rocks and placed them strategically in Poplar Park, around trees and benches, for the people who live and work in the area to find. They also planted African daisy seeds, which are indigenous to the Western Cape. “We hope to see them blooming when Spring arrives! We also picked up litter in the park and along the canal as we walked back to school,” said Mrs Kim Storey (Grade 5 Teacher).
  • The Grade 6s created over 75 soup jars to donate to the Callas Foundation and Ladles of Love NPO. The Callas Foundation is a local organisation that supports women, children, and men through services such as community outreach, psychosocial support, and access to justice. One of their key initiatives is a community kitchen programme, which benefits directly from generous contributions like these soup jars and sandwiches. Pupils collected and brought in empty glass jars, which they carefully filled with layers of wholesome ingredients like lentils, beans, legumes, stock cubes, and pasta – creating colourful, nutritious meal packs ready to be shared with families in need. “We are proud of our Grade 6s for embracing the spirit of giving and making a meaningful difference in their community. Their efforts reflect the values of compassion, service, and active citizenship that Mandela Day celebrates,” said Mrs Geraldine Coetzee (Grade 6 Teacher).
  • The Outreach team set out to brighten the day of the little ones at Village Tods Educare Centre when they hand-delivered sandwiches, fruit, and beautifully-decorated cookies on Friday afternoon. “It was a lovely opportunity for our pupils to actually see the instituion that we so often partner with for outreach initiatives,” said Ms Megan Hector (Head of Outreach).
