Cannons Creek designs selected for Irma Stern Museum Exhibition

The Grade 11 Design pupils (Amaal Cassiem, Anika Alli and Mbali Mbulawa) from Cannons Creek embarked on a journey of discovery with the Irma Stern Competition. They really immersed themselves in the life of Irma, and chose to produce visual Merchandising products relating to Irma Stern. This regional competition received entries from over 40 schools and three of our Grade 11 pupils’ works were selected to be on display at the museum. “Congratulations to all the Grade 11 Design students for producing unique products and we applaud their hard work and dedication.” – Mrs Elzette Malan, Design Teacher.

Amaal Cassiem’s Design focused on the colours identified in Irma’s works and she was inspired to create a repeat geometric pattern which draws inspiration from the wooden door frames Irma Stern used to frame her Paintings. Her unique visual merchandising product is a fully functional scarf, which when folded becomes a bag with a strap.

Anika Alli’s surface design drew inspiration from Irma Stern’s love for painting flowers, she then translated the flowers onto a bag. Her Visual Merchandising products were soaps which she made, combining different scents, depicting Irma’s travels and in her mind the beauty that she saw in people.

Mball Mbulawa was fascinated by Irma Stern’s painterly style and her lavish dinner parties. She then chose to merge the idea of food and paint by producing a beautifully painted placemat in the shape of a pallet with a variety of food types and painting tools instead of cutlery.
