Cannons celebrates Christmas with Carol Service and Family Picnic
We had a lovely evening on Monday 1 December 2025, starting with watching all our pupils perform carols, followed by a relaxed family picnic on the field. Thank you to Ms Levitt, Mrs Gopal, and Mrs Theys for their preparation efforts, and well done to our pupils for adding some festive cheer. We were blessed to have Mrs Ingram (High School Teacher, and parent) join us in celebration, and to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. Well done to our Choir who sang ‘Christmastime’, and it was a special moment to witness Isla Rockhill (Grade 5) performing a solo, supported by her aunt Mrs Ingram. Thank you to all our families who donated toys, and foodstuffs – these will be donated to EduTots and Mothers That Care.
The message:
We are here to celebrate the most famous birthday in history: the birth of Jesus Christ. And when we think of Christmas, our minds immediately go to that one perfect, peaceful scene: the manger, the star, the gentle baby. It is beautiful, it is humble, and it is absolutely essential to our faith. Tonight, I want us to look at the prophecy that foretold this event, found in Isaiah 9:6.
“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulders.
And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”
The prophecy starts right where we like to start: ‘A child is born.’ This is the part we sing about. But a baby, as cute as they are, is also limited. A baby cannot feed itself, a baby cannot walk, a baby cannot speak a single complete sentence, and certainly, a baby cannot rule a kingdom. To prove this point, we asked some of our brilliant pupils, from the Pre-School, about their younger siblings.
To truly grasp the magnitude of the King who reigns, we must leave the humble stable and look up, far up, to the breathtaking scale of the universe He governs. The fact that this immeasurable, powerful King chose to humble Himself to a tiny, dependent baby, so that He could grow up, die, and reign for us, is the entire miracle of Christmas. Why would the God who holds billions of galaxies in His hand choose to come as a baby…? Well the answer is quite simple, He did it for you! “Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.” (Philippians 2: 7-8)
As you light your candles tonight, let them be a reminder: You are not celebrating a distant event. You are celebrating a God so vast He rules the cosmos, and yet so intimate He made the journey from the right hand of God… to the manger… and ultimately, to the cross… just to save you.
