Cannons Creek Independent High School announced its 2026/2027 Prefects at its Prefect Induction Service on 28 August 2026. In a special rite of passage and a truly symbolic act – the current office-bearers’ candle flames were extinguished, and the incoming Prefects’ candle flames were lit. See below speech from Mr Currie (Head of Leadership) in an address to the outgoing Prefects:
Good morning special guests, outgoing prefects, parents, teachers and of course pupils.
At its core, prefectship is service. More specifically Prefectship is about service to the school, service to the pupils and service to the teachers.
Service translates into time, and our outgoing Prefects, sitting here before you today, have given generously of their time throughout their period of office. This is time they could have spent on their studies or other interests, but instead they chose the altruistic route of prefectship.
This is why I am standing here this morning to thank our Prefects, on your behalf, for their time.
During the year the Prefects have given continuously of their time through their various roles. The range includes organising whole school events all the way through to the specific Prefect portfolio events.
What they have done has added much value and lots of colour to our annual school programme.
The Prefects are thanked for the many school functions they have been involved in, or run entirely. The list includes:
- The Grade 8 Parent and Pupil Orientation evening in the 4th Term last year
- The New-Pupil Orientation Morning held the day before school started this year
- Open Day
- Outlining their leadership journeys at the Primary School’s Grade 6 Leadership Training session.
- Prefect Assemblies each term
- The running of fun activities for the whole school on one of the days in the last week of Term 4 last year
- Managing Tutor Representative elections each term, and
- Quizz Night during the third term – an event run by all the prefects.
More specifically, I will now thank the prefects who ran each portfolio this year starting with:
1. Juan and Amarachi: Cultural Prefect Portfolio
Portfolio Events this year:
- Karaoke night
- Time-to-Shine second-break concert series
- Juan, thank you for your outstanding prefect Instagram videos, several of which went viral, as well as for the organising, together with Amarachi, of the highly successful and well attended karaoke evening. The show was all the more glamorous for the dynamic role you and Amarachi played as MC’s to the audience of pupils from all Grades. Karaoke night has become one of the highlights on the Cannons prefect calendar and the two of you have continued the tradition.
- Also thanks to both of you for organising the Time to Shine concert series that ran during break times and offered our talented musicians another opportunity to showcase their music talents to supportive audiences.
- Amarachi, Head Prefect, you will always be remembered for your meticulously prepared, beautifully worded, and often highly motivating speeches made during the course of the year, as well as your role, together with Oscar, in co-ordinating the Grades 7 & 12 Buddy System.
2. Oscar, Sophia and Grace: Because We Can Prefect Portfolio
Portfolio Events this year:
- Total Ninja Trampoline Park
- Block 11 Climbing Jim
- Oscar, Deputy Head Prefect. Thank you for the role you have played, together with Amarachi, in keeping the prefect body united with a common focus during the course of the year. The respect you show for others draws people to you and, in turn, their respect for you becomes reciprocal.
- Both the events you, Sophia and Grace organised this year were highly successful and well attended. They have added value to the school. The excitement among the attendees at Total Ninja grew as the difficult challenges were repeatedly attempted and finally overcome. The same excitement held for the climbing-wall challenges at Block11.
- In addition, I need to thank Sophia, who, together with Salih, quietly managed the prefect Google Drive during the course of the year. This job happens in the background but plays a pivotal role in the coordination of the prefect body during their time of office. Also, thanks for keeping the prefect Google Calendar updated.
- Grace, the introvert Prefect who literally comes alive and switches to extrovert on stage – thanks for your valued contribution with a variety of prefect-run events. You added soul to the events. Also, thanks for your management of the Prefect Notice Board. Together with Amarachi you have kept this space updated, attractive and dynamic throughout the year.
3. Hannah and Imrah: Public Relations Prefect Portfolio
Portfolio Events this year:
- Matric Year Book
- Fundraising for the matric Year Book
- Social Media – Prefect Instagram
- Hannah thank you for your role as manager of the prefect Instagram. Many of the quirky videos and photos of Cannons in action can be found on this platform. You have added another layer to more than a decade of memories embedded in the prefect Instagram. Thank you for all the time and effort this has involved.
- Hannah, you also need to be thanked for your Messages to Matrics initiative this term. Literally the whole school warmed to this initiative and each matric pupil has received multiple messages in their envelope wishing them all the best for their upcoming final exams.
- Imrah, your big work still lies ahead as you proceed with the final editing and printing of the matric class of 2026’s Year Book. We look forward to seeing this publication. It will be a life-long memory for each Matric, a record of their 5-year high school journey at Cannons Creek. The Year Book is another example of a behind-the-scenes task that takes literally hundreds of hours of work to complete.
- Also, Imrah, thanks for all the fundraising that you have done for the Year Book and for the countless duty-rosters and other rosters you and Juan have created and repeatedly re-created during the course of the year. Making rosters is a chore, yet it is impossible for a prefect body to run smoothly without rosters.
4. Zahid and Salih: Sport Prefect Portfolio
Portfolio Events this year:
- The 5-Aside soccer event at Tekkers in Mowbray saw enthusiastic teams match their ball skills against one another. While the competition was fierce there was always a tempering underlying spirit of sportsmanship. It was warming to see pupils from all grades participating. 5 – Aside soccer has long been a popular prefect portfolio event and thanks must go to Zahid and Salih for the planning of this.
- Also, Salih, thanks for the time you spent running the Focus Week programme this year, and keeping it alive through assembly announcements and an array of colourful posters displayed around the school to remind pupils of the Focus Week themes.
5. Zahid and Hannah: Environmental Prefect Portfolio
Portfolio Events this year:
- Volunteering at the Soil-For-Life Community Gardens
- Assisting with the Clothes 2 Good collection drive
- Thanks Zahid and Hannah for taking a group of Cannons pupils to volunteer at Soil-For-Life. The group contributed by weeding, distributing fertilizer, packaging seeds and moving soil.
- Thank you also for your assistance with the Clothes 2 Good collection drive.
6. Conclusion:
In conclusion and on behalf of the school: the pupils, the teachers, and the broader Cannons Creek community – I would like to thank each of you, the prefects of 2026, for your time given to us.
