Cannons Creek Independent High School announced its 2026 Prefects at its Prefect Induction Service on 23 September 2025. In a special rite of passage and a truly symbolic act – the current office-bearers’ candle flames were extinguished, and the incoming Prefects’ candle flames were lit.

Mr Currie’s speech to the outgoing Prefects:
Good morning special guests (which includes our out outgoing Prefects), parents, teachers and of course each of our pupils. Here I stand again – one year later – to thank our outgoing Prefects for
what they have done. Words cannot begin to describe their contribution to Cannons Creek this past year.
So I am thanking them for the official school functions they have been involved in or run like Grade 8 Orientation Day, Open Day, Carnival and many others. I thank them for the prefect portfolio events they have planned and coordinated – the last of which happened only yesterday.
But it’s not just the big Prefect events that are worthy of thanks. What also counts are the small things in Prefectship – the small things in the life of a prefect can count just as much as the big things, even though they often appear to happen in the background. I speak of the small things that seldom appear on any to-do list and that often go unnoticed, It is the small things that continuously take a trickle of your time as a prefect, and by the end of the year add up to hours of time. By small things I mean when you, a prefect, stop to chat to a younger pupil who looks like they need your support or give advice to a pupil or attend a school event. Often it is the small things that that have the most profound impact on others. This morning, I want to thank each of our outgoing prefects again, not only for the big events they have run so successfully this year (including 11 prefect portfolio run events on and off-campus), but especially for all the small things they have done that count just as much and have added so much value to our school.

Through your portfolio events, and especially through your leading by example, you have made an indelible impact on the pupils of this school this year. I think I can safely say I have seldom seen two prefects who have worked together in such harmony and who compliment one another so perfectly. You are all that your portfolio stands for – Inter-connected. It started with your unforgettable and carefully interwoven speech at prize-giving last year that was both informative and humorous and left us hanging onto your every word. It ended with your last portfolio event yesterday – the Buddy-Braai between all the Grade 12’s and their Grade 7 buddies. The two of you have led and supported the prefect body with dignity and
purpose throughout your tenure and have earned your titles 100x over. The two of you are also the epitome of diplomacy, each with your own particular style – quiet, carefully thought through, and strong. This is an essential skill when it comes to leading a prefect body and must have come in handy with your bi-weekly meetings with Mr Morton. Also thank you Reese and Scott for keeping the Comment Box system active throughout the year. Taking pupil comments to Mr Morton is such an important part of your role as Head Prefects – you were the perfect go-between pupils and school management. Thank you for your support and phenomenal contribution to Cannons this past year.

The three of you, passionate about culture at Cannons, have been an unstoppable force. Those who attended the Karaoke Night and Cannons Got Talent event will know what I am speaking about. As master of ceremonies for these events you were an act all in itself with your entertaining entrances, sometimes extravagant dress and actions. Your presence was a big factor in the overall success and entertainment value of the show, always adding glamour and spirit. We loved you on stage. Also let us not forget the legacy of Mbali and Michael’s electric guitars on stage. We will miss your playing. And Molly, who amongst the girls will ever forget your off–the-cuff address to an all-girls assembly where you spoke about certain issues of disunity amongst the girls. Who will ever forget your opening line ‘we are a sisterhood’ – you could have stopped your
talk right there with the impact of your words striking directly to the heart of each girl, turning it around in that moment. And who can ever forget you in full sprint on the 100m athletics
track – who could ever forget the incredible victories you have had there to deafening cheers from your Riverside house and at our Inter-Schools events and at the Zonals, and how narrowly you
missed qualifying for Provincials. You definitely hold the record for being the fastest female prefect the school has ever had. And then there is your love of piano and our love of listening – all
of this we will miss.

The two of you now have the association of being the ‘action-Prefects’ after running these highly successful and popular events. Both of you have, in your quiet way, gone about organising these
smooth-running events so that there could never be a question about their success. Who will ever forget the airborne Cannons pupils at Total Ninja trampoline park and the rushing about at Laser Tag, where everyone was desperate to shoot the other but simultaneously not wanting to be shot. It is highly likely that your events were the absolute highlight of the year for the participating pupils. What you did through these events was to built spirit and camaraderie amongst the pupils. These events were the realised objectives of your portfolio. Thanks for this and your many other
significant contributions to the Prefect body. And Talya let us not forget your leadership role as U19 Girls Hockey Captain and Captain of First Team Indoor Hockey. It can be said you have truly led by example with your endless enthusiasm for your sport and this is reflected in your role
as a Prefect.

Zawadi and Plamedi – who will forget your role as managers of the Prefect Instagram Account. Many of the quirky videos and photos of Cannons in action can be found on this site. You have added to more than a decade of memories embedded on our Instagram. Thank you for all the time and effort this involves. Your big work still lies ahead as you proceed with the final editing and printing of the Matric Class of 2025’s Year Book. We look forward to seeing this publication which will be a life-long memory for each Matric of their high school years at Cannons Creek.
Shahaan Ho Kim & Plamedi Mpiana – Sport Prefect Portfolio

Shahaan and Plamedi, the events you have run during the course of the year have added great value to Cannons and the prefect body. You and Plamedi complemented each other well. Plamendi you were always a good moderating influence each terms Sport Portfolio plans.
Both events were fully attended, and the competition was fierce at times. So fierce that bones were even broken – Naa’eem. It was warming to see Grade 11 and 12 boys and girls playing 5-aside against Grade 7s and slowing their game to give the Grade 7s a chance to score until it
dawned on the seniors that they were up against a formidable force that had every intention and every chance of beating them. That added zest to the games.
And, Shahaan, in hockey and cricket, you have been a formidable force, leading through your sports and your sportsmanship. Always giving of your best, be it a nail-biting match or an ordinary practice. You were the right prefect to run the Focus Week programme. You always had command over the school when you made your weekly announcements about the ever-changing focus week themes. The pupils always respected you and the example you set. Thanks to both of you.
Conclusion:
Prefects, your moorings are ready to be cut. Your ship is ready to head out to sea. Your engines are good to go and your compass is reading true north. Your leadership skills have become a part of you and will stand you in good stead for the rest of your life journey. We will always remember you by your slogan ‘Strong Alone – Unstoppable Together’. Thank you.
