Cannons Creek Independent School held its end of year High School Prize-giving event on Thursday 4 December 2025; honouring achievers in the Academic, Sporting, Cultural, and Service realms. Ms Judith Herbig was the Guest of Honour as she retires at the end of this year. Thank you to Caitlyn Wong Ho who performed ‘Little Streams’ on the piano.
Extract from Mr Morton’s speech:
Within school, you belong to your class, your grade, your house, your teams, your clubs, and your societies. Some of these groups form around academics, some around sport, some around creativity or service. In each of them, you learn something important: belonging doesn’t require that we all think the same or agree on everything. It simply requires respect, commitment, and a willingness to contribute to something bigger than ourselves.
And then we all belong to even larger groups, our neighbourhoods, our city, and of course, our country as South Africans. I appeal to that sense of belonging each time I insist that we sing the national anthem with pride.
Tonight, though, I want to focus on one particular group: the group called Cannons Creek Pupils. My hope is that you feel a real sense of pride in calling yourself a Cannons Creek pupil. That you feel loyalty, not the kind that excludes others, but the kind that binds us together. Loyalty to our values, to our school, and to one another. Pride shows itself not just in the big moments, but in the small, everyday actions: singing the school song with conviction, wearing the uniform correctly, treating staff and fellow pupils with respect.
